A new study finds that the sediment of Milwaukee harbor contains greater levels of antibiotic resistant bacteria than was found in raw sewage or bodily fluids collected from patients at the Medical College. These findings indicate that overuse of antibiotics may be contributing to the proliferation of antibiotic resistance in the environment, which could have implications for infection prevention and control. The CDC states that “Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections.”
