Interesting article on harmful algae blooms, toxic cyanobacteria and fecal pollution in Madison area lakes. The article discusses the limitation of current microbial monitoring tests. It cites one study that estimated from 2003 to 2009, 40 percent of the beach advisories and 60 percent of the closures in Wisconsin were unnecessary, while the water was probably unsafe 10 percent of the days beaches were open.
