MILWAUKEE, WI – February 22, 2016 – Microbe Detectives LLC, a Wisconsin-based pioneer in environmental metagenomic services, announced today that it has launched an eCommerce site for its proprietary state-of-the-art DNA analysis services. The services are focused on analyzing microorganisms in wastewater, municipal drinking water, and surface water systems for the purpose of creating powerful new insights in risk mitigation and cost savings opportunities.
DNA Analysis Services
This new electronic procurement service substantially streamlines and simplifies the DNA analysis process. Turnkey kits with collection supplies, sample ID labels and pre-paid shipping are included as part of the standard offering. Also included is an interpretation of the results that is application specific and communicated in a clear, accessible and detailed report. Consulting services are available to address more complex needs.

“The application possibilities to mitigate risk and reduce costs in wastewater, drinking water and surface water systems are extensive,” said John Tillotson, CEO of Microbe Detectives. “As just one example, the EPA estimates 3.5 million people become ill each year due to contact with raw sewage from sanitary sewer overflows, and ten percent of all American beaches exceed the regulatory requirements for water quality. However, communities often do not know if the contamination comes from agricultural animal waste, sanitary sewer overflows, or something else such as birds, because current standard testing methods do not provide this type of diagnostic insight. With our DNA detective work, Microbe Detectives can conclusively pin-point the microbial contamination source or sources, and help communities take concrete steps towards solving their water contamination problems.”
“Wastewater treatment is a microbial process that can be fickle and difficult to troubleshoot,” said Tony Dallmier, PhD, VP of Sales for Microbe Detectives. “Troubleshooting is typically performed by analyzing microbes with a microscope. However, this method can only identify large microbes with unique shapes or staining features. Most microbes responsible for wastewater treatment are small without unique shapes. In an example application, our client’s waste treatment process was having problems with bulking and poor settling. Microbe Detectives’ DNA detective work provided conclusive evidence that the problem organisms were Haliscomenobacter, a filamentous microorganism that is very difficult to identify with a microscope. Armed with this insight, we were able to advise the client on an operational solution that:
- Avoided fines from permit violations
- Solved problems without chemicals or capital expense, and
- Improved treatment performance
